An optical access network is an access network that uses light as the transmission medium, instead of copper wire, to connect every home. Optical access network. An optical access network generally consists of three parts: OLT, ONU, and ODN, which are the core components of OLT and ONU.
1. What is OLT?
OLT stands for Optical Line Terminal. The OLT is an optical line terminal and a telecom office device. It is used to connect the optical fiber trunk and functions as a switch or router on a traditional communications network. It is a device at the entrance of the Internet and the entrance of the Intranet. Placed at the office, the most important execution functions are traffic scheduling, buffer control, and the provision of user-facing passive fiber optic network interfaces and bandwidth allocation. Simply speaking, it is to achieve two functions: upstream, complete the uplink access of PON network; Downstream, the obtained data is sent to all ONU user terminals through the ODN network.
2. What is ONU?
ONU is an Optical Network Unit. The ONU has two functions: it selectively receives the broadcast sent by the OLT. If the data needs to be received, it receives and responds to the OLT. Collects and caches Ethernet data that users need to send, and sends the cached data to the OLT end according to the allocated sending window.
3. What is ODN?
ODN is an Optical Distribution Network. It is a physical channel for Optical transmission between OLT and ONU. It is mainly used for bidirectional transmission of Optical signals. It usually consists of Optical fibers and cables, Optical connectors, Optical splitters, and supporting devices connected to these devices. The most important component is the optical splitter.
4. What is ONT?
ONT is an Optical Network Terminal and the most Terminal unit of FTTH, commonly known as "light cat". ONT is the optical network terminal that is applied to the end user, while ONU is the optical network unit that may have other networks with the end user. ONT is a component of ONU.
