机械式三环偏振控制利用光纤在外力作用下感生双折射原理制成。其中三个环分别等效为λ/4、λ/2、λ/4 三种波片，光波进过λ/4波片转换为线偏振光，再由λ/2波片调整偏振方向，最后经由λ/4波片将线偏振光的偏振状态变成任意的偏振态。由双折射效应产生的延迟效果主要由光纤的包层半径、光纤环绕半径和光波波长所决定，经验证该控制器可产生全方位偏振态的变化，调整的偏振态可覆盖整个庞加球。

（测试单位：光纤环直径 56mm，光纤包层直径 125µm）

举例：偏振控制器光纤环固定直径为 56mm，将包层直径为 125µm 的单模光纤绕在其中；

当 λ=1550nm，环绕圈数 loop=1 时，该环相当于 λ/2 波片；

当 λ=1550nm，环绕圈数 loop=3 时，该环相当于 3λ/2 波片。
