As communication companies continue to work to deliver high-speed internet access to rural and remote areas, the cost of running fiber-optic cable presents a financial challenge.
A combination laser-radio technology from AOptix, designed for and used by the military, may provide the solution.
For the transmission of very high volumes of data, it’s hard to compete with fiber-optic cable, however laser transmission comes close and it possible without the work and expense of trenching and laying cable.
The downside to lasers is that they in foggy weather. Similarly, radio transmission can be hampered by heavy rain. Combined, with one creating redundancy for the other however, a laser-radio system may be the most economical way to deliver broadband internet speeds to the masses.
According to a recent press release, three mobile carriers in the United States are testing and evaluating the technology. Additionally, Nigeria and Mexico are on their way to implementing it as a solution for their citizens.
